Hurricane Season is here - Do you have a pet hurricane plan in case of an evacuation?

Have you planned for you AND your pet in case you must evacuate?

June 1st through November 30th is hurricane season and at K9 Advisors we want everyone, people and pets, to be safe and the best way is planning ahead.  Making sure you have your hurricane supplies for your family and pet(s) now is the first step.  The next step is preparing for a hurricane evacuation for your family and pet(s).  We all hope that an evacuation will never happen but unfortunately it can and having your plan now is a necessity.  Time and time again last minute preparations as a storm rapidly approaches still takes place and if the unimaginable happens and an evacuation is necessary the family pet(s) can easily be overlooked.  But taking the time now to make an evacuation plan will ensure your family and pet's safety.

K9 Advisors has put together information that will be helpful in creating a hurricane evacuation plan for your pet(s).  Planning ahead to locate a shelter or hotel for your family and pet(s) is very important.  Many hurricane shelters do not allow pets, except for service animals, so you need to find a shelter in advance that will accept not just your family but your pet(s).  In K9 Advisors directory we have a list of pet friendly hotels, shelters and more.

We have found a free hurricane guide provided by the Humane Society of Miami to download or pick up at one of the Humane Society locations.  The guide has preparedness tips, pet friendly hotels and boarding kennels in South Florida areas including a new pet friendly evacuation shelter for people in Miami Dade County. Remember to register in advance with a pet friendly shelter, once the storm approaches registration will stop.

Here are some tips for pet owners:

 * Leave early if you live in an area that may be evacuated.
 * Make sure your pet(s) has current immunizations.
 * Pets should wear up-to-date identification and be micro-chipped.
 * Take your animal's food with you. Stressed animals may experience intestinal problems,
but using the same food will help reduce the trouble.
 * Have copies of pets' vaccinations, medical records and prescriptions.
 * Keep a pet carrier and leash close at hand.

Here are more helpful sites for your family hurricane season plan.  Please remember how important your hurricane plan and hurricane supplies are so start today!

As K9 Advisors wants us all to be well prepared for hurricane season and if you have additional information to help out other families and their pet(s) owners please feel free to contact us via email or go to our blog.  Preparing early is the key during hurricane season!
